Molly Breitmün is a non-traditional student majoring in conservation with a minor in GIS. Her interest in campus sustainability was fostered by becoming an undergraduate fellow for the St. Croix Institute for Sustainable Community Development as well as by her peers in the Student Alliance for Local and Sustainable Agriculture.

Last week I experienced the most treacherous road conditions I have ever faced on a bicycle. The wet snow that froze on the streets of River Falls got polished and compacted by a few days of car traffic. My wheels spun and fishtailed as if I were on a skating rink.

A handful of fools continue to bike on campus all year round and I am one of them. Because we are fanatics, we are excited to inspire a few others to enjoy pedal power with us in the Arctic tundra.

This past fall, I volunteered along with other UWRF Destination service trip leaders and interns at the St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity. Working beside a sorority and a few community members, we put in insulation, hung drywall, and painted trim.

What we do not have is $1.7 million for our UW-River Falls Fiscal Year 2015. What we do have is an opportunity to rely on our resiliency as a University that has made a commitment to sustainable community development and action in the face of climate change.

Agritourism is a farming practice that utilizes tourism to further bolster the sustainability of a farm through diversified means. Farmers are notoriously dependant on factors that are uncontrollable, like late springs, drought and foreign imports making prices fall drastically.
