The UWRF Boomwhackers Ensemble held its spring concert April 17 in Abbott Concert Hall. The group is a percussion ensemble that performs using boomwhackers, colorful plastic tubes tuned to specific pitches.
This year’s concert featured a video game theme, with music from titles including Skyrim, Animal Crossing and Super Mario Galaxy.

Several pieces included audience participation. Ensemble members handed out boomwhackers to attendees, who played alongside the group during select songs.

The Boomwhackers Ensemble was founded four years ago and is one of the few collegiate groups of its kind in the
United States. President Robin Anderson said the ensemble began as a lighthearted idea but quickly grew into a serious musical outlet.

“We started it out as just like a funny thing, but it’s also like we’re taking it seriously,” Anderson said. “This is a real ensemble. I think of it as a really good way for people who aren’t as involved in music to get involved with music.”
