Homecoming creates student involvement opportunities

September 23, 2010

UW-River Falls Homecoming takes place every year, but this year students will have the opportunity to participate in various events that are new to the University.

Homecoming week will kick off at 5 p.m. on Monday with window painting on Main Street Businesses. Students will decorate the windows of businesses for the best decorated window competition.

The Perfect Pair Game Show will be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the Falcon’s Nest of the University Center.

This tends to be a popular event among students, according to Falcon Programs Traditions Programmer Maranda Mahr.

“Once you get to the event, you can sign up to be in the show,” Mahr said. “They have dance offs, sing offs, and ask funny questions about other contestants. There are two comedians who host the event, so it’s really funny.”

Bingo will be held at 8 p.m., Wednesday in Pete’s Creek in the UC. All students can participate and winners receive prizes.

A Bean Bag Tournament will be held at 4:30 p.m., Thursday in the UC Mall. Students can sign up for this event in advance through the athletics department and will compete in teams of two. UWRF’s mascot, Freddy Falcon, will be competing in the tournament in a celebrity match.

“The winners of the tournament will receive a prize,” said Mahr. “This is always a fun, popular event that students seem to like.”

“Last year my friends and I watched the tournament but didn’t play in it,” said sophomore Aaron Larsen. “Everyone was laughing and having so much fun that me and seven of my friends are going to play it this year.”

The Lip Sync Competition and Project Runway are two events that will be held at the same time: 8 p.m., Oct. 1, in the North Hall Auditorium. Students who participate in Project Runway will be backstage making elaborate superhero costumes. These costumes will be modeled while the Lip Sync Competition is being judged.

“All types of materials will be used to make the costumes,” said Mahr. “There will be all kinds of fabric, wire, and a lot of other stuff to make the outfits.”

“I just heard about the Project Runway competition yesterday,” said freshman Annie Frasier. “I think it sounds great and would be fun to watch or compete in.”

The homecoming parade will take place before the game at 10:30 a.m., Oct. 2 in downtown River Falls. Students, local businesses, alumni and student organizations and clubs will all take part in the parade.

Following the parade at 11:30 a.m. will be the tailgating party on Ramer Field. There will be food available for purchase and various games available for students to play.

Following the Homecoming Game at 8 p.m. in the UC Ballroom will be Comedian Jay Black.

The final event of Homecoming week will be a dance at 9 p.m. in the UC Ballroom.
