The UW-River Falls Falcons women’s golf competed at the UW-Whitewater Spring Invite, finishing tied for sixth place out of 18 teams with a score of 40-over par.
Lauren Skov and Martha Effertz led the Falcons with rounds of 80, tying for 18th place in a field of 100 golfers. Megan Bermejo followed with an 81, while Lily Sullivan shot an 87 and Ellie Whitbread recorded a 90.
For individuals on the team, Madison Hanes shot 89, Annika Summerbell a 96, and Kate Krauklis had 100. Bermejo said consistency played a key role in her performance.
“I feel like not making big numbers was what helped me maintain my round,” Bermejo said. “I could have improved by managing the course a little better and brushing up on my putting.”
UW-Stout Blue Devils won the team title with a score of 13-over par. Stout’s Julia Imai earned medalist honors with an even-par 72.
The tournament was originally scheduled as a two-day, 36-hole event but was shortened due to severe weather. Teams instead played nine holes each day after heavy flooding impacted the course.
Severe thunderstorms swept through the Janesville area Friday night, bringing heavy rain and damaging winds. The storms caused widespread flooding, road closures, and power outages. According to Juliana Tornabene of WMTV, “Three locomotives in total derailed and crews are working to bring the train cars back on track.”
Officials reported that roads were closed; residents were displaced due to flooding, and trees were downed across the city. An EF-1 tornado was also reported just southwest of Janesville.
According to WISN 12 News, “The Wisconsin National Guard had been deployed to Rock County to assist with damage from an EF-1 tornado and ongoing flooding.”
Course conditions remained difficult throughout the weekend, as wet grounds, cold temperatures and strong winds pushed wind chills below 30 degrees.
Severe storms and tornado activity continued across Wisconsin, causing additional structural damage in communities throughout the state.
