The Student Voice editor for the past year has been Johan Harworth, who has been part of the publication for six semesters and served as editor for two. He will graduate May 9 with a double major in english and music.

As part of a series profiling graduating Student Voice staff members, I sat down with Harworth to discuss his future plans and the advice he has for current and incoming reporters.

Harworth said his time with the Student Voice helped him develop a wide range of skills.

“I learned how to reach out to people, work alongside others, gather information, leadership, communication and how to be an editor for journalistic writing,” he said.

When asked what guidance he would offer to new reporters, Harworth encouraged students to follow their interests.

“Write whatever you feel like,” he said. “Write the stories you care about, write about what you feel you do best, and use this opportunity to get out there and see the campus. If you’re ever nervous because there’s a lot happening, Student Voice is a great way to get a little taste of everything.”

Harworth plans to pursue a master’s degree and a career in professional writing. He also hopes to launch his business, 512
Dynamics, a company focused on publication and production projects ranging from freelance business writing to the creation of games, films and books.

His key piece of advice for students is simple: “Check your emails, because if you don’t have your back with your academics, no one else will.”

Reflecting on his year as editor, Harworth expressed pride in the publication and its staff.

“As the editor of Student Voice, I’m proud of everyone in Student Voice,” he said. “I feel like I accomplished the mission I set out to grow the program, and I feel that I’m leaving it in confident, capable hands. I know they’re probably going to do much better than me.”
