Bacon Bash set next weekend
What started out as a brainstorm in a saloon transformed into the largest free bacon festival in the nation, according to the organizers of the event. The River Falls Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau will host the seventh annual Bacon Bash festival. Located in Heritage Park, the festival takes place on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15.

The use of the term “spirit animal” became an internet trend a little over a decade ago, and has now become widely used in popular culture. This normalization has contributed to the cultural appropriation of the Native American community.

Dining Services on campus encourages student feedback
Dining services is the food provider to the UW-River Falls campus, available to students at the University Center. There have been several changes to dining services over the last decade, including new management, inclusive menu options and an updated system for students to provide feedback. UW-River Falls is currently contracted with Chartwells, which is a food service firm.

The nature of dating in the 21st century
Dating in the 21st century is complex. In the past, couples simply met in person and had to contact each other through the home landline, usually after awkwardly meeting whichever family member answered the phone. Today, however, people can be easily contacted through Snapchat, over text, sending a quick meme to Instagram DMs, or, of course, Tinder and other dating apps.

Campus under a polar vortex
Due to extremely cold weather, Chancellor Dean Van Galen announced that classes were canceled on Jan. 29, beginning at noon, and all day Jan. 30, as well as the morning of Jan. 31, at the UW- River Falls campus. Extreme cold alerts had been going out all across the midwest as an arctic wind blew in.

House in River Falls a 'total loss' after fire
Early morning on Saturday, January 26th, River Falls firefighters braved the piercingly cold temperatures to extinguish two house fires at 222 E. Walnut St. and 209 S. Third St. At 1 a.m., the River Falls Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire near Jacob’s Ladder Preschool, an Ezekiel Lutheran Church affiliate.

Dancing with Diversity impacting campus
Dancing with Diversity is a student organization at UW-River Falls, with a focus exploring international dances and building friendships. The club meets Monday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. in the small studio at the Falcon Center.

Fitness influencer Amelia Skye tells her story
A day at the office for Amelia Skye consists of taking and posting pictures for her 348,000 Instagram followers. After recently moving to Los Angeles, Skye was able to support herself off her large Instagram following. Skye’s passion for fitness, combined with skills learned at UW-River Falls have allowed her to build a career.
