Student Voice wins six awards

The Student Voice at UW-River Falls picked up six awards during the annual convention of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, including three first place honors. The 2018 Collegiate Newspaper Contest awards were announced Friday, March 8, in Madison.

Campus seeks solutions to hunger problem

Food insecurity is not something students often consider when looking at which college they will call home temporarily. Food insecurity on college campuses has become an apparent problem in recent years, including at UW-River Falls. Food insecurity is defined by the USDA as “a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food.”

The Academy Awards, also known to many as the Oscars, is the oldest worldwide entertainment award ceremony, going on its 91st iteration. The first award was presented back in 1929, and has been a staple of film achievement ever since.

FERPA’s role with student information

There are many students on campus that are unaware of how their personal information can become public once they register to become a student here at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Student privacy is protected under the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). According to the university website, FERPA laws govern “The release of student education records maintained by the university, and access to these records.”

This fall began the sixth year with no change in the tuition costs of schools in the University of Wisconsin System. Gov. Scott Walker was the one to implement the tuition freeze back in 2013.

The world of news media, as a whole, has been faced with some interesting challenges in recent years. The model for journalism has changed with the coming of the internet, for starters; it’s more difficult to get subscribers and advertisers to pay, the twenty-four-hour news cycle has changed the pace at which news is disseminated and journalists have to work twice as hard to ensure that they are heard amidst the online rabble that competes for audience’s attention.

UWRF is predicted to grow, so where are we putting people?

The Student Voice does not see this as a sufficient or fair plan. One of the roots of this problem is the two-year residency rule. This is a UW System policy, and it requires that first and second-year students must live in the residence halls. There are exceptions for anyone over 21 years of age, veterans, married students or people with extenuating financial circumstances. Students can also opt out of living in the dorms if they have a permanent address within the approved commuting zip codes.
