New businesses pop up in River Falls
In the span of four months, River Falls introduced a new grocery store, Aldi, and a new Culver’s to town. Both businesses had residents of River Falls waiting as construction was happening over the last bit of 2018. Each new business is located on Main Street, and both have been very popular among the residents, including UW-River Falls students.

Student Senate members lobby in Madison for UW System
On January 15-17, two members of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Student Government Association had the opportunity to travel to Madison, Wisconsin to lobby for the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents. The two members of Student Senate who traveled to Madison were SGA President Rosie Pechous, and Oversight and Rules Director Evan Pankow.

Staff predicts Oscar outcomes
The Academy Awards, also known to many as the Oscars, are the oldest worldwide entertainment award ceremony, going on its 91st iteration. The first award was presented back in 1929, and has been a staple of film achievement ever since. Many categories have come and gone over the years, however the Best Director category has been around since the beginning.

UWRF receives reaffirmed accreditation
Last semester, the University of Wisconsin-River Falls went through the process of becoming reaffirmed by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The report from the on-campus visit was received in mid-January and the result granted the university re-accreditation.

Tobacco-free policy and e-cigarette use on UWRF campus
UW-River Falls has actively been a tobacco free campus for the past five years. The tobacco-free policy was implemented in July of 2013 and since then there has been a steady decrease of tobacco use on campus.

The International Friendship Program at UW-River Falls has been a project on campus for several years and helps many international students transition into their lives here in the community.

Local bakery and creamery gives back to the River Falls community
Mei Mei’s Cookies and Creamery shop is a local business located in downtown Wisconsin, River Falls. It has dedicated many efforts toward giving back to the community. The small business is relatively new to town after opening just a little over a year ago, on August 15th, 2017.

UW-River Falls prepares for Higher Learning Commission visit
This October, the University of Wisconsin River Falls will be visited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) to determine if the university will be reaccredited. In order to check on all schools receiving accreditation, which is money from the government, the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) selects regional and national accrediting agencies to ensure schools are using this money to provide quality education for students. The HLC is based in Chicago and is the north-central corporation in charge of reviewing degree granting, post-secondary schools.

UW-River Falls hosts the annual 'Run with the Cops' event in support of Special Olympics
The third annual “Run with the Cops” event was held at the UW-River Falls campus at Ramer Field this past Tuesday, Oct. 2. This is one of Special Olympics Wisconsin’s biggest events, as they raise money for their athletes. This family friendly event is also held at four other various campuses across Wisconsin.

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is welcoming a new Director for University Communications and Marketing, Dina Fassino. Fassino believes she has many strengths and new perspectives to bring to this campus as well as having many high hopes for her future here at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
