UWRF works to overcome budget lapse challenges

UW-River Falls Chancellor Dean Van Galen is looking at ways to cut spending after the University was ordered Oct. 14 to return nearly $1.8 million of taxpayer money over the next two years back to the Wisconsin government as part of a plan to balance the state budget. UWRF administrators said the order unfairly targets the UW-System.

UW-River Falls grows rare flower

In September 2010 UW-River Falls received attention for a rare blooming flower. The corpse flower, also known as a Titan Arum or Amorphophallus Titanum, which had been grown from a seed planted in the greenhouse by Daniel Waletzko bloomed.

Senate wants student IDs to help voters

The UW-River Falls Student Senate is working to get student ID cards to comply with a new Wisconsin law requiring voters to show a photo ID before casting a ballot, a requirement Student Association President Tyler Halverson called “a transparent attempt” by Republican lawmakers to keep college students from voting.

While the Allocable Fee Appropriation Board, or AFAB, prepares to begin hearings on student organization budget requests for next year, Student Senate passed a motion that will give AFAB coffers a yearly boost.

AFAB allows seg fee funding for dues-based student orgs

The Allocable Fees Appropriations Board, or AFAB, voted Oct. 6 to approve a motion that would give dues-charging organizations like fraternities and sororities access to student- provided funds next year, thus ending a debate that had persisted at UW-River Falls since 2008.

Derogatory language being used carelessly

The results of a national poll show a majority of teenagers and young adults think it is OK to use derogatory language, as long as it is kept between friends. A UW-River Falls Student Life program aims to change that view.

Student Senate back in gear for fall 2011

The new UW-River Falls Student Senate met for the third time this semester on Sept. 13 in the Willow River Room of the University Center. Among the first order of business was a vote that approved an amendment to change the way club sports programs are funded.
