UWRF Falcons Fall Short Against UW-La Crosse, Playoff Hopes Dimmed
November 19, 2024
The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons suffered a narrow 28-24 defeat to UW-La Crosse on Saturday at Ramer Field, dimming their postseason prospects. The loss drops the Falcons to 5-2, placing them in a must-win situation for the remainder of the season to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The game remained close through the first half, with both teams trading touchdowns and keeping the score tight. Reflecting on the game, UWRF Wide Receiver Blake Rohrer said, “Our team played with heart, but we couldn’t capitalize on a few key moments that made the difference.” By halftime, the Falcons held a narrow 17-14 lead, but the Eagles defense showed resilience, holding off several scoring attempts.
Falcons quarterback Riley Warzynski threw for 241 yards and one touchdown, while wide receiver Austin Rush acknowledged the team’s missed opportunities. “We gave it everything we had but La Crosse kept the pressure on us in the final minutes,” said Rush, who caught a 40-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.
Defensively, Aaron Borgerding led UWRF with 13 tackles. Despite his efforts, the Falcons’ defense couldn’t stifle the Eagles’ strong offensive push late in the game. “We had to make every play count, and unfortunately, they got the best of us this time,” Borgerding said.
The loss leaves UWRF in a precarious position, with little margin for error in their remaining games. “This isn’t the end for us. We’ll use this loss to come back stronger,” said Coach Jay Vang.
The Falcons will face a tough test next week against UW-Whitewater, knowing a win is critical to keep their playoff dreams alive.
